Health and the Microbiome

According to a recent book I read called “The Human Superorganism: How the Microbiome is Revolutionizing the Pursuit of a Healthy Life,” and various other sources, there are a few things you can do to help protect yourself against developing NCD’s (Non-communicable diseases). There are also things you can do during and after pregnancy to help develop the baby’s microbiome. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Breastfeeding (preferably/if possible) – to colonize infant (immunity)
  • Vaginal delivery (preferably/if possible) – to colonize infant (immunity)
  • Eat peanuts (during pregnancy may reduce allergy)
  • Skin to skin contact (to colonize infant)
  • Avoid antibiotics and drugs (preferably/if possible: & take probiotics/yogurt with)
  • Nurturing behavior (epigenetics)
  • Keep a dog (for healthy bacteria)
  • Avoid cats with Toxoplasmosis (and litter boxes)
  • Take probiotics and/or eat yogurt, kefir, fermented foods

  • HPA axis
  • Cortisol
  • Serotonin comes from tryptophan
  • FB (Firmicutes-Bacteroidetes) ratio
  • Propionic Acid increases gut permeability leading to inflammation (and of the brain)
  • Largest factor associated with cancer and NCDs is Inflammation
  • Autism patients have more clostridium species
  • Biome depletion Theory
  • Nrf2 pathway
